Preview Preview. By Anonymous Great program - a definite must-have. This program is exactly what I needed to free up space quickly on my Mac! It is very similar to t he free Windows program WinDirStat (which actually inspired this program's author to create Disk Inventory X).
After scanning your hard drive, it shows all of its contents to you all at once as a window filled with blocks, where larger files are represented by larger blocks. Clicking on a block shows you detailed information, including that file's name, exact size, and location. But you can read about all of that-and plenty of other handy features-in the description.
This program has come in handy time and time again. If I've been working on a bunch of stuff involving big files, or if I'm just doing a periodic house-cleaning, this lets me quickly see what files are taking up the most space (disk images, for example) and send them to the trash straight from the program.
In the folder tree on the left side of the window I can also select a folder and see it highlighted in the block view, which shows me how much space that whole folder's taking up. If my hard drive's free space begins to dwindle, it doesn't take long to figure out why. Disk Inventory X is a very well-designed, elegant program that does its job and looks good while doing it.
The latest version is available as a universal package, so it should work in Snow Leopard without needing the extra Rosetta components for PowerPC programs. If you're even casually interested in knowing what you've got on your hard drive and keeping it all organized and tidy, Disk Inventory X is a definite must-have for your toolkit.
Pros: Easy to use. Visually simple, clear, and organized. File information easily accessible.
Can open or delete files without leaving the program. Can scan and look at the whole hard drive or just a subfolder - or scan the whole drive and then zoom in. Cons: Scanning the entire hard drive can take a while, depending on the number of files it has to go through. Reviewed on November 26, 2009. Articles about Disk Inventory X.
