The accommodations are basic but comfortable and most have private baths. Don’t confuse this hotel with its much more popular sister property near the geyser, the Old Faithful Inn. Choose from lodge rooms located in the main building, or motel-style accommodations in the Western and Frontier Cabins.
A full-service dining room and quick-service Geyser Grill provide on-site dining options. This lodge is one of the two park accommodations that open for the winter season. Generally accessible in winter only by over-the-snow vehicles, this lodge attracts many cross-country skiers. We stayed three nights in an Old Faithful Snow Lodge Cabin. The Snow Lodge was the only accomodation still open at the time we visited, with everywhere else already closed for the season. The cabins are quite small, very basic, and the beds are TINY! It was supposed to be a double bed, but I swear it was even smaller, and either the floor or bed sloped so we kept rolling to one side.
The bed was also too short for my husband (who is, at 6 feet 2 inches, admittedly quite tall), and his feet stuck out the end. The staff at the hotel desk were rather less than helpful, hotel facilities pretty limited (no games room or gym for example) and the food in the restaurant both awful and expensive (see my other review of the Obsidian Dining Room). On the plus side, the shower was hot, and the room nice and warm, even when the outside temperature dropped to -16 degrees C. It was also good to stay in the main geyser area, as we could walk around in the morning before the tourist buses started to arrive, with hardly anyone else about. Tea, coffee and toiletries were provided, and the cabin was serviced every day. However, due to the uncomfortable bed and appalling food we didn’t get a whole lot of sleep, and would certainly not recommend staying here. This hotel is across the huge parking lot from Old Faithful Inn and geyser.
It's not as large, it's newer and certainly quieter. The rooms were large and clean. The Obsidian had a great/affordable breakfast and nice bar area. (We couldn't get in here for dinner but had reservations across the road) The staff at both the front desk and restaurant/bar were great-very friendly. This is much more sedate than across the road but suited us well.
Location is good for getting up to Mammoth/Norris area and down to Lake/West Thumb. There is a lot to see in this part of the park so it made a great base.
